Liver diseases (non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, hepatitis, cirrhosis of the liver, etc.) are among the most common causes of mortality and disability of the world’s population. This circumstance is largely due to the involvement in the pathogenesis of other organs and systems of the human body, in particular the cardiovascular system. The purpose of this article is to summarize information about the role of non–alcoholic fatty liver disease in the development of atherosclerosis and to identify the main pathomechanisms that can link non-alcoholic fatty liver disease with atherosclerosis. To achieve this goal, an analysis of experimental and clinical studies on foreign databases Embase and PubMed /PubMed Central was carried out. Based on the analysis of the literature, the following key pathogenetic links linking non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and atherosclerosis can be identified: endothelial dysfunction, lipid profile disorders, increased production of a number of pro-inflammatory cytokines and inflammatory reactions, hyperhomocysteinemia and increased oxidative stress. The growing morbidity and mortality of the population from cardiovascular and hepatic pathologies creates the need for further study of pathophysiological mechanisms in order to find new targets for therapeutic and preventive effects and early biomarkers for optimal diagnosis of these diseases.
