A histologic study of 300 atherosclerotic carotid sinus plagues obtained at operation of carotid endarterectomy revealed the structural components and processes characteristic for severe atherosclerosis: foci of atheromatosis, fibrosis and calcification, newly formed vessels and hemorrhages, lipophages and lymphocytes, foci of edema and necrosis of collagen and elastic fibres, covering thinning and ulceration, thrombi and the contents of plaques on their surface. Аt hemodynamic stenosis patients with ischemic stroke in their history had the sings of severer atherosclerosis than those with asymptomatic stenosis. They were found to have more commonly atherosclerotic plagues with «unstable» structure that showed a predominance of atheromatosis foci over the portions of fibrosis and calcification with covering thinning and lipophages infiltration, covering ulceration, formation of thrombi and other potential embolic material on plagues surface.
