This paper presents an analysis of the short- and long-term results of classical carotid endarterectomy with patch plasty of arteriotomy hole. The patch material was a criterion for the separation of all patients into two groups: the first, in which polytetrafluoroethylene patches had been used, and the second one - patch of autologous vein (a fragment of the great saphenous vein of the lower limb). In the short-term postoperative period no statistically significant differences in the incidence of various complications were found, so it was concluded that the material of the patch does not affect the immediate results of carotid endarterectomy. In the late period of time in the group with polytetrafluoroethylene patches the frequency of hemodynamically significant restenosis of the operated carotid artery was significantly higher (10.4% vs. 1.3 %, p < 0.01), which was the reason for the increased frequency of ischemic stroke in this group of patients (3.5% vs. 0 %, p < 0.01).
