The main method of treatment of schizophrenia is antipsychotic therapy. Drug-induced movement disorders in patients with schizophrenia reduce the quality of life of patients, which dictates the need to find markers for the prediction of risk . The purpose of this study was to investigate the activity of antioxidant enzymes in red blood cells of patients with paranoid schizophrenia with tardive dyskinesia . A total of 26 patients receiving long-term antipsychotic therapy were investigated. Patients with tardive dyskinesia showed a significant decrease in activity glutathione antioxidant enzymes such as glutathione peroxidase, glutathione reductase and glutathione -s- transferase. Oxidative stress and decreased antioxidant defense play an important role in the pathogenesis of tardive dyskinesia. These features in the activity of antioxidant enzymes of red blood cells of peripheral blood can be used as a basis for developing a method for predicting the risk of tardive dyskinesia in schizophrenia.
