The article analyses the shift of concentration of plasma cortisol among the patients operated with endotracheal anesthesia and spinal anesthesia of an integral “stress hormone” that has been regarded as the evaluation criterion for adequacy of anesthesia. We have also studied the risk of hemodynamic incidents among young and elderly operated patients. Less pronounced glucocorticoid response during central blockades implemented at regional (spinal) anesthesia is a chance to consider the effect of spinal anesthesia as a method of intraoperative pharmacological protection among elderly patients, and especially among those who suffer from a cardiovascular disease. Such patients are a group of a particularly high operational and anesthetic risk.
