This literature review presents evidence that glaucoma – is a neurodegenerative disease, with theories of development are some neurodegenerative process. Analysis of published data obtained in experimental and clinical studies indicates that in primary open-angle glaucoma occurs degenerative process that involves not only the retina and optic nerve, but the entire visual pathway, in the flesh to the cerebral cortex. This mechanism is similar to other neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s or Parkinson’s. Development of neurodegeneration in glaucoma combines multiple factors and pathways of apoptosis ganglionic cells (oxidative stress, excitotoxicity, Fas-mediated signaling pathway, the effect of mutations of genes), but they are somehow related to mitochondria, as the basic unit, responsible for the energy processes in the cell and apoptosis.
